Low Poly Portrait

As the artist of this piece, I wanted to create artwork that was unique and different. Using Adobe Photoshop, I first picked a celebrity to render. I chose Cristina Yang, a main character in Greys Anatomy. The polygonal lasso tool was primarily used to create the triangles that covered her face. The use of triangles creates a stimulating and refreshing effect to a standard portrait. The Photoshop feature, Actions, allowed me to create and fill triangles while copying and pasting the triangle back onto the “copy layer”. This was very useful because the process was done using one shortcut. I created the shortcut “Command G” to employ Actions. In addition, I merged many of my layers to ensure that Photoshop continue to work efficiently. A fill-in layer was crucial to completing this project. After creating all of the triangles, I added a new layer, called fill-in, and used the eyedropper tool and the paint brush tool to make sure all of the triangles connected. To create details in the face, I designed very small triangles. Small triangles can be seen in her eyes, lips, and the contours of the cheek bone. Although the celebrities’ cheeks are a wide area, I designed the darker areas (the ends) with small triangles leading to bigger triangles in the center of her cheeks to create to an illusion. There are also tiny triangles in the eyes to show the variety of colors and details that are present. Some challenges I faced during this project was making each side of the face even. By this, I mean making sure that the triangles on the right cheek were the same size as the triangles on the left cheek. Both halves of the face need to look as though they were done at the same time and by the same artist. I think that I successfully completed this project. My artwork displays an interesting and unique approach to a Low Poly Portrait, and I am very happy with the results.
