Celebrity Photo Retouch
As the artist of this piece, I wanted to retouch Meryl’s face, removing her wrinkles and evening out her skin touch, without making her look like a different person. I started the project by fixing the lighting. I used “levels” to make her skin brighter. To fix the deep wrinkles in her forehead, near the eyes, and on the cheeks, I primarily used the spot-healing tool. To make her skin look as natural as possible, I used a small brush and used tapping motions. For the deep wrinkles, between the eyes, I used to patch tool. This patch tool was useful because it completely removed the wrinkles, with skin that blended in perfectly with the existing skin. Secondly, I filled in Meryl’s eyebrows and part of her hair. Filling in the eyebrows helped to complete the face. To do this is used the paintbrush tool and made a new layer. In addition, I used the paintbrush tool to fill in Meryl’s lipstick. The color on her lips was very uneven and filling in her lips made her look younger. I made Meryl’s mouth and eyes a little bit bigger. I did this by selecting them with the polygonal lasso tool and transforming them to make them a little bit larger. Lastly, I used liquefy to slim her nose and edges of her face. One of the challenges I faced during this project was ensuring that Meryl still looked like the same person. I strove to ensure that she is still recognizable. I think that there should be a small warning or disclaimer on highly edited photos. Many people strive to achieve unrealistic standards of beauty because they see 60-year-old women on the cover of magazines without a single wrinkle. Additionally, it can be false advertising if photos are retouched. People may think they can get flawless skin with a particular makeup, but in reality it is just Photoshop that is giving the model perfect skin.
